What’s the difference?!?! Recovery Residence or Oxford House

Oxford Houses are typically single-sex adult houses, but some allow residents to live with their minor children. The goal is the provision of housing and rehabilitative support for the alcoholic or drug addict who wants to stop drinking or using and stay stopped. From the beginning, we have chosen to rent – not purchase – single-family homes in good neighborhoods, convenient to transportation, job opportunities, and retail. Oxford Houses flourish in metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis and Washington D.C., as well as in smaller communities like Clarksville and Greendale, Indiana. Any recovering alcoholic or drug addict can apply to get into any Oxford House by filling out an application and being interviewed by the existing members of the House.

Oxford houses exist in Massachusetts, among a number of other communities. A variety of other studies have also found that sober living homes appear to be an effective component of the recovery process. An American Journal of Public Health study compared individuals who lived in a sober living home to those who only received outpatient treatment or attended self-help groups. Several factors determine length of stay, such as the severity of the addiction, a person’s history of substance abuse, their recovery progress, ability to follow rules and ability to pay rent.

Clearly, it is important to improve the quality of the data for outcomes research with residential substance abuse treatment. Both NIDA and NIAAA have health services research study sections that are willing to review these types of applications. It is hoped that more researchers will consider developing grant proposals in this area, particularly as research focusing on the solution of applied problems is becoming a larger priority area for the federal government. With adequate funding, large clinical trials can emerge and adequate personnel can be employed for the arduous task of tracking over time these at-risk samples. Over half of the individuals who participated in this study were women. Half the participants were randomly assigned to live in an Oxford House, while the other half received community-based aftercare services . We tracked over 89% of the Oxford House and 86% of the Usual Care participants throughout two years of the study. Of note, members were able to stay or leave the residence voluntarily – 95% moved out of their respective Oxford Houses at some point over the 2-year study, for example. For those assigned to usual continuing care, case managers at the treatment center referred individuals to different combinations of outpatient treatment, mutual-help, and other community resources.

They are called “halfway” houses because those living in this sort of environment are transitioning halfway between a full-care facility to permanent living in society. The four travelled out of town to a 12-step meeting, where Kelley purchased drugs from an acquaintance. Both Jamie and the 2 gentlemen from the structured sober living were unaware that Kelley bought heroin, but after they returned to town and dropped off their friends, Jamie confronted Kelley about her odd behavior that evening. Kelley confessed to Jamie that she had been using for over a week while living in her Oxford house and offered Jamie some of the heroin. Jamie used after 8 months of clean time, overdosed and was transported to the hospital.
